about
adapted from the poem Waking Dreamer by Lynn Acoose from the web project isi-pīkiskwēwin-ayapihkēsīsak (speaking the language of spiders)
lyrics
Children playing out in the snow don’t know twilight’s danger
that car up on blocks it might fall
and that slushball might hold a rock
and when that gas bomb did suddenly blow
all the glue sniffers in the shack became waking dreamers
and they don’t even care about comin’ back
only dreamin’ about being buried
- under-their-roof-of-desires.
The waking dreamer dreams of white
and cleaned sheets crisply starched ain’t life
life gets slimy, crusty worn out grey
‘cause when you bang it up - life gets that way.
Tryin’ to hold on to not a hell of a lot
- put a roof over your scrapings
so you swallowed that river stone
and a rock in your guts won’t spill out
it’ll only explode if it gets really hot
it’s a tumor that hurts a tight choked off knot
and your guts pull you down your breath throws you up
but it feels real is saving you
- from lettin’-go-of-what-you-don’t-got.
The waking dreamer dreams of white
And cleaned sheets crisply starched ain’t life
Life gets slimy, crusty worn-out grey
‘cause when you bang it up - life gets that way.
His blindness seeks shiny things
So he lay down in some snow that sings
and became a bird with icy wings
And for awhile cut through that crust that stings
And oh the sickness this desire it brings
And his white crystal roof
- will-melt-away-in-the-spring.
The waking dreamer dreams of white
And cleaned sheets crisply starched ain’t life
Life gets slimy, crusty worn-out grey
‘cause when you bang it up – life gets that way
‘cause when you hang it up, life gets that way
‘cause when you bag it up - life gets that way.
